When and why should I have
my cat neutered?

It is advocated that castration or neutering be performed at a young age before the cat has the opportunity to breed. It is best if your cat is fully vaccinated before surgery to prevent against disease.

Adult male cats have a strong urge to mark their territory through spraying. Neutering your cat eliminates this urge.

Aggression is greatly reduced as castration eliminates the competition between male cats. Neutering reduces fighting and abscess development in male cats.

Male urine odor is particularly strong and pungent. Castration leads to a change to a more normal urine odor. Many owners claim that their intact males become much cleaner, less odorous, and better self-groomers after neutering. Abscess formation as a result of fighting is far less frequent.

Perhaps the most important issue is that millions of cats are destroyed annually at animal shelters in North America. Neutering males is as important as spaying females when it comes to population control.
